Dear Mr Sample:

Cancer research has come a long way in the last few years. Thanks to research, scientists now have a far better understanding of this devastating disease than ever before. One result is the improved tests and treatments we are now starting to see in hospitals and treatment centres.

Scientists are tantalizingly close to understanding the molecular basis of cancer - but the last crucial steps must still be taken. Please help them to take those steps by supporting the CLIENT.

The mission of the CLIENT is to improve cancer prevention and treatment, and to ultimately find a cure. We are a non-profit organization receiving no government funding, so we depend heavily on the generosity of individuals like yourself.

Founded in 1945, we have grown into a respected supporter of research nationwide. In the past six years alone, we have given over thirty million dollars in research grants, fellowships, and studentships

We recently funded 41 new and exciting new studies in areas across the spectrum of cancer research. Each project gives scientists a unique and important insight into cancer - how it develops, how it can be diagnosed earlier and treated more effectively.

The process by which normal cells become cancerous is incredibly complex. Often, one molecular event triggers another in a sort of domino effect - with the end result being cancer. In the last year, we funded 15 projects studying these intricate molecular and genetic reactions.

As they understand these reactions better, scientists may be able to identify markers, specific molecules whose presence signals the start of a tumour. This could help doctors identify cancers while they are still treatable. These studies could also show researchers ways to stop cancer in its tracks by interrupting the process of tumour formation.

Normal cells have elaborate safeguards - cellular 'brakes' to prevent them multiplying too fast. But cancer can damage these 'brakes' while at the same time 'jamming the gas pedal down,' so damaged cells multiply far faster than they should. The result is the runaway growth characteristic of tumours.

With our support, scientists are looking for ways to help cells 'put the brakes on' when tumours start to grow, and to interrupt the processes which lead to uncontrolled replication of cancerous cells.

With your support, these important studies will continue to receive the funding they need and deserve. Your generosity will also help us continue to support exciting research into using the immune system to fight cancer, and into starving tumour cells to death by cutting off their blood supply.

Thanks to breakthroughs in genetics and molecular biology, we are discovering new and better ways to diagnose and treat cancer. But we are not finished yet.

This year, an estimated 67,400 Canadians died of cancer - and over 139,000 were diagnosed with this terrifying disease. And, because cancer is still primarily a disease of the elderly, these numbers will rise over the next few years as Baby Boomers age. To counter this threat, our greatest hope is research.

The CLIENT is committed to supporting this vital research - but to do so, we need your help.

Your generosity will move us closer still to the day when cancer can be cured. Please take a moment now to write your cheque for $25, $50 or more and put it in the envelope provided. Your donation will mean a brighter tomorrow for women, men and children across Canada.

On behalf of the people whose lives you will touch, thank you.

Sincerely,

John Q. Doe

Executive Director

P.S. Researchers are closer than ever before to unlocking the mysteries of cancer. They urgently need your support to make the breakthrough discoveries that are so near and so very important. Thank you so much for supporting this lifesaving research.
