The universe is not only strange but stranger than we can imagine

“Fiction is the lie through which we tell the truth.”
― Albert Camus

  1. “Fiction is a lie through which we tell the truth.” This line is all over the internet and is always attributed to Camus. I’ve read all of his works in English and still cannot find the line. Perhaps it only appears in the French editions?
In any event I would like to find the source for a manuscript. Can anyone help? I’ve been advised to simply state “attributed to Albert Camus.” Yet this strikes me as less than honest. Either Camus wrote this line . . . or he did not.

    • I have always understood the quote to be from Camus. Exactly which work I don’t know, and you are correct, it is surprisingly hard to pin it down. If I learn more I will let you know.

  2. What is the source of this quote?
